Keine SCHUFA, kein deutscher Vorvermieter – was stattdessen?
Your rights: questions you don’t have to answer
German data protection authorities consider many questions inadmissible, e.g. about religion, political views, pregnancy or ethnic origin. Asking about nationality is generally considered sensitive; you may leave such fields blank. Never lie on admissible questions like income or rent arrears, though – that can allow the landlord to void the lease later.
Häufige Fragen
Is there an official English Mieterselbstauskunft?
No. There is no official form in any language. Some landlords offer bilingual versions, but the German version is the standard.
Do I need to translate my documents into German?
Usually not for English documents like employment contracts or payslips. For other languages a short German or English summary helps.
Can I rent an apartment without a SCHUFA record?
Yes, but it is harder. Compensate with an employment contract, payslips, a guarantor (Bürgschaft) and a reference from your previous landlord.
Should I state my income in euros?
Yes, as monthly net income in euros. If you are paid in another currency, convert it and note the original amount.
